French
Briefing
French
player’s briefing
You are Marshal Ney. The
Emperor has given you the honour of leading the great attack by
D’Erlon’s corps that will sweep away the British from
the ridge of Mont St. Jean. A grand battery of 80 guns has been
assembled that will prepare the way with a preliminary
bombardment. Then you must attack.
Of the four infantry
divisions of D’Erlon’s first corps, part of one
(Durutte’s) must protect your right flank by masking and
perhaps occupying the area of Papelotte, La Haye and Smohain (off
the table). It is therefore not available for the attack on the
ridge. Three brigades of cuirassiers are allocated to support
your infantry and there are light cavalry and lancers to your
right (off table) that can also support you if you get into
difficulties.
You must clear the British from the ridge by
4.30 p.m. at the latest (the end of game turn 14). It is now 1.00
as your artillery opens fire.

Notes on the French
OB Ney can change the orders
of any formation. D’Erlon and Milhaud can change the orders
of formations in their own corps only.
The 6lb
horse artillery battery attached to Jacquinot’s 1st
Cavalry Division was positioned overlooking the Papelotte area.
It did not accompany the division in their counter-attack against
the Union Brigade and has therefore been left out of this
scenario.
Delort’s second brigade of cuirassiers did
not take part in the counter-attack against the Union Brigade, so
it has been left out of this scenario (along with the division’s
horse artillery battery) in the interests of game balance.
*Both
the 7th and 11th Cuirassiers were seriously
under strength, owing to a shortage of horses.
